We know that our very beginnings with Eve caused the fall of mankind. The specific downfall came from Eve listening to error and then acting in agreement with it. But the Lord have ever been vigilant to counsel us through His prophets of just what error listening can do. Let us read this specific counsel —
“I was shown the necessity of those who believe that we are having the last message of mercy, being separate from those who are daily imbibing new errors. I saw that neither young nor old should attend their meetings; for it is wrong to thus encourage them while they teach error that is a deadly poison to the soul and teach for doctrines the commandments of men. The influence of such gatherings is not good.
If God has delivered us from such darkness and error, we should stand fast in the liberty wherewith He has set us free and rejoice in the truth. God is displeased with us when we go to listen to error, without being obliged to go; for unless He sends us to those meetings where error is forced home to the people by the power of the will, He will not keep us.
The angels cease their watchful care over us, and we are left to the buffetings of the enemy, to be darkened and weakened by him and the power of his evil angels; and the light around us becomes contaminated with the darkness.
I saw that we have no time to throw away in listening to fables. Our minds should not be thus diverted, but should be occupied with the present truth, and seeking wisdom that we may obtain a more thorough knowledge of our position, that with meekness we may be able to give a reason of our hope from the Scriptures. While false doctrines and dangerous errors are pressed upon the mind, it cannot be dwelling upon the truth which is to fit and prepare the house of Israel to stand in the day of the Lord.” (EW, p.124-125)
Now that is saying much counsel to us. Obviously the Lord’s messenger tells us to stay away from error. But how do we know it’s error?
One of the good analogies we like to use is the following —
The professional counterfiet expert, for example, first learns all there is to know about the original. He studies it inside and out, knows every detail about it. After he is so well familiar with it THEN he comes to a good vanage point to discern the false. But if he doesn’t have that solid familiarity with the original, he would be much more likely to be fooled by the counterfeit.
The Scriptures say more on our topic —
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but having itching ears, they shall heap to themselves teachers in accordance with their own lusts.” (2 Tim. 4:3)
Today there exists quite a few preachers and teachers who for one reason or another exalt themselves into the “new and exciting” role of the “latest and greatest” to teach the itching truth. Let us look at some examples out there today.
1) Stephen Bohr
He is a well known SDA pastor who has been around for many years. Recently he has been promoting what he calls “Anchor School of Theology” (see link below). Unfortunately Bohr has proven himself to be one of the biggest outright snares to The Lord’s present truth message of Elijah (Mal. 4:5). A few years ago he hired ex-Shepherd’s Rod member, Ismael Rodriguez, to present a 10 part series attempting to destroy and malign the Lord’s Rod message. Instead of following the Lord’s written word “hear ye the Rod”, they said to not hear it. In other words believe them and their ideas rather than the straight clear Word of God. Truly workers for the arch deceiver!
“The LORD’s voice cries to the city— Wisdom shall see Your name: “Hear the Rod! And Who has appointed it.” (Micah 6:9)

2) Lennox Sam
Sam is a special kind of deception and we dare say MUCH more effective and deceiving. As we mentioned above, for the simple reason of not being trained and studied in the original (writings of the Lord’s Elijah message aka Shepherd’s Rod message), you can very likely become snared with his teachings. They are well planned and artfully executed.
He is very well familiar with the Rod, yet because of this he knows just enough to twist it here and there, to re-channel it toward himself as the real Elijah (though not stupid enough to say it outright). He has been at this game for over 15 years and unfortunately many “itching ears” have joined his group and their counterfeit doctrines have infiltrated the Lord’s vineyard.
Most of the snared are the “lean on flesh” types (Jeremiah 17:5) who have itching ears and want to follow a man who skillfully itches their ears instead of Christ, who’s Word makes clear the Truth (John 16:13). Instead of doing a “one on one” thorough study of the message (only with the Spirit of Truth guiding), they prefer to have the message served on a man’s platter, complete with private ideas and interpretations. A thing condemned by the Word of God.
“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2 Peter 1:20-21)

3) Pastor Henriques
Another one similar to Lennox Sam, but he doesn’t care to know the Lord’s final message of Elijah. Rather, he makes his business warning of the “big bad bogey man–the Pope” and the Catholic church, specifically through the Jesuits. In other words, instead of warning of the SDA church judgment to come very soon, he’s out ther warning the world of Popery and other worldly schemes to hit the world.
The Rod is very clear on this trickery and those who partake, let us read —
“Is Satan working for God’s and His church’s interest or against? If against, he will never do one thing to purify the church or to fulfill the prophecy.
The only thing that would compel him to pass blue Sunday laws and go “to make war with the remnant of her seed” (with those that are left, Rev. 12:17) is the purity of the church when God by the slaughter weapons of Ezekiel Nine takes away the tares which received not the mark, and even then Satan will not enact “blue Sunday laws” until after he has exhausted every other weapon against the church. Therefore, as long as the church remains in her present Laodicean condition, there will be no blue laws or “war” against her, but a bluff only to make her members believe that they are free from his snares and that he is still trying to cause them to fall.
But the worst of it all is in that they are sound asleep, which is shown by the fact that they still think Satan is working terribly hard to fulfill God’s word by trying to pass blue laws and are not aware that he is only playing with them as a cat with a mouse, and the brethren “to whom the Lord has entrusted the spiritual interests of the people” (“Testimonies for the Church,” Vol. 5, p. 211) instead of sounding the alarm to arouse the church are determined to even silence the voice of the Rod, and thus rocking her to a more sound sleep!” (2 SC, no. 1, p.9-10)

In closing, we see that error can indeed lead us astray, especially if we fail to learn the original FIRST. Some are lazy and would prefer to be spoon fed rather than let the Spirit of Truth guide. The Great Guide which the Lord, our King, made in this great promise —
“However when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.”(John 16:13)
