Carnal Music—an insidious tool of the devil

I remember when I was just a little tot, I was told I used to get up and dance to the TV, with Elvis Presley playing. Even at such young age, my carnal desires were exposed. As I grew, music encompassed a good part of my life. My small turn-table, the radio,  and Tv all pleasured my senses for music. Infact I can recall at about 8 or 9 losing to a great degree that small steady voice of the Holy Spirit that I had heard in my early years. Instead music filled my senses (the beatles, all the english invading bands, etc.) It was NO coincidence that I was being led that direction. Because the devils know full well that their tool (music) is VERY effective in drowning out the Holy Spirit’s small voice. How can it compete with the pounding and hypnotic sound of music?!

People today are “soothed” by music. Just look around. TV, radio, stereos, Ipods, internet, malls, shops, you name it. Music is EVERYWHERE! It’s main purpose (aside from our carnal desires) is to drown out the Holy Spirit’s voice! All set up by the devils work. If he can get you to ignore that small still voice he knows you’ll be diverted to worldly desires.

In my own experience I’ve found it’s soothing effect so powerful. Before I was a true Christian  I so often turned to it to satisfy my soul and bring me “up”. Once a person finds Christ, they should discover that music has to be delegated to a very minor place in their life. God wants to talk to us and we should be ready and ABLE to listen. Music is a competitor directly to the Holy Spirit. Don’t let the devil influence you through it. Besides the Holy Spirits voice should be “music”  to our ears! 🙂

Yes bro, the devil sure is using music to captivate the mind. He knows that through the ears and into the mind he can gain control.
We must not forget that God can and does use music also. The Psalms are songs and also many times David writes about praising God with instruments. So there is a right and a wrong. Like many other tools we have today, they can become idols, worshipped and thus come before God.
I certainly can relate with the ipod. In my street ministry most people are tuned out so it makes it a real challenge to get their attention. The days of just speaking out loud and saying “hello” are fast fading away. It’s a communication break down.
    Thanks brother!

Very true bro about music being good in the right way, infact a most beautiful gift if done right. The real “sad” point I wanted to make it is the evergrowing music tool the devils are spreading. Even Christians need to look at this aspect of their life. The more we listen to “other” things (tv, radio, internet.etc.) the less we can clearly hear that small steady voice.

  3. Todd Says:

Another eye-opener. I agree with you both. I guess we need to “come to the quiet” (Jim Hohnberger)

    -Todd

  4. godsloveandlaw Says:

Todd, it amazes me how our God is so powerful, yet, so gentle. That small voice is so faint yet so clear, it’s like the quiet speaking.

  5. Deborah Grace Says:

Indeed, music had been used to divert our attention and influence us in ways that depart from goodness. May music indeed have its proper place in our lives, which is to bring us closer to God!

  6. godsloveandlaw Says:

Agreed Deborah, so much music today is devil based and so little music is God inspired. It seems each generation makes actual “satanic” music more than the generation before.

  7. chasbell Says:

I totally agree to a certain extent. My husband is the worship pastor at our church and I sing in the choir, so I also know how important music & our singing praises to God are to Him. Music is God’s gift to us to enjoy in this life and to taste, in some small way, the glory of heaven to come. The importance of music in the Bible is indicated by the fact that God’s creative and redemptive acts are accompanied and celebrated with music. At creation we are told, “…the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?” (JOB 38:7 NIV). At the incantation it says, “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:13-14 NIV). I’m not saying that we shouldn’t limit the types of music we listen to. All I’m saying is that GOD created music. He created it so we could worship Him. If we use music the way God intended, which is for worship, I see no harm.

  8. godsloveandlaw Says:

Agreed. Music, in itself is not bad. it’s only when it pleasures our lusts and desires and becomes a soothing for our soul in place of Christ that it becomes a problem.

  9. Mary Says:

Thank you all for the post.
Friends what ever we do the important is our Motive.
Music is where some people they express their feelings and music also where we feel God is near and recall back what have we done.

Anything its depends with our motive.

    God bless

  10. godsloveandlaw Says:

I would agree Mary, that music is not always a bad thing. Infact there is much beautiful music in heaven. My point was “today” the devil is using this medium to stear MANY away from Christ, with awesome success. So I think we should be very careful to enjoy the “right” music, and not to a point where it becomes a major influence on our life ( Only Jesus has that place) Thank you for your comment, Rob

  11. Mary Says:

    True Rob,

    The point is that,
Whoever handling any music or songs they must know
the guide lines to that music or song.
They must know how to handle it.
Any instrumentals can be bad if we dont know how to handle it.
Many when they do music and songs in Gospel,
They not showing to God but,
they showing their self how they can play it.
so the concentrations to God is gone but to their own self.

So anything in this world can be bad if we take it in a bad way.

    Amen

  12. Mary Says:

    Satan is everyway.

    Satan replaced…

    Fresh air – Smoke
    Fresh juice – Alcohol
Healthy food – Un healthy food
    Heavenly song – worldly songs

So we have the intelligent to compare either its belonged
    to…God Or Satan…

God is good all the time

  13. godsloveandlaw Says:

Agreed my sister, you said it very good, thank you.

  14. Teri Hart Says:

I really enjoyed reading this post and all 14 comments. What I have never understood is why any christian would listen to and still love the worlds music. The worlds music is anti Christ. How can one stay on the narrow path and feed themseves on this music that leads to destruction? When I accepted Christ as my savior I abandoned my worldy music and replaced it with christian music that glorifies God. I would never want to go back to that music and be remined of the sin that it all represents. I only want to renew my mind with songs that sing about my God and His word, as it should be.

  15. godsloveandlaw Says:

Teri, you said is so true and powerful, thanks for this, I am enriched.

  16. Chanel Says:

    Be blessed

  17. godsloveandlaw Says:

    Thanks Chanel, you as well.

  18. Carmen Rosario Says:

Teri it’s really true what you said…because as a singer with a gift that God have given me to praise Him, I have many friends inviting me to sing for the world……. like i used to do before, they said you are waisting that voice, could be making good money, I have said no” Because from that world I came, also have friends that send me worldly songs…. wish those when you listen to….. will tranfered your mind to old times and what you used to do… also make believe those times were good times and that is really satan working to take people out of praising God, even the music in the church we have to select, what we will praice God with, I have seen music introduce to the church that make me feel like running out.

  19. Teri Says:

Amen, Carmen! You are hearing the voice of God! 🙂

  20. Omar Ramirez Says:

I Love the word of God and what Jesus did for me and truly understand that I am saved. That being said I believe there are certain types of music that are evil and truly belong to the devil, which is what the mob consumes. I have prayed about this and I believe the Holy Spirit has led me in my music selection and that music is God sent, but corrupted my man’s rebellion and carnality just like other natural things(i.e. sex, plants, etc) . I think about God when I listen to music ans how certain sounds are unparalleled just like Gods love. You can dismiss this and say that i am confused or God isn’t truly with me but faith is what we all are led by and that is what I’m following.

    • godsloveandlaw Says:

I agree with you sister Carmen, most of today’s church music has much to be desired.

Omar, I appreciate your comments and feel the sincerity you express. each must make that choice (what is music acceptable to God). So I encourage you to keep walking up the sanctification latter. May I suggest our post called “The Sanctification Process” listed under Sanctification heading. God be with you brother.

  21. Tytea Says:

How would you explain that to teen nowadays they think that music just music and the beat is good

  22. godsloveandlaw Says:

Dear Tytea, I would make a copy of this post and give it to them, that’s what i would do. They must be told that music is often a direct competitor to the Holy Spirit. How can they listen to the HS with loud pounding musuc??

  23. alyce williams Says:

awesome post… I would recommend the seminar “Media on the Brain” it goes into ALL types of media and the affect it has on mentally, physically and spiritually…

  24. Lee Mashebe Says:

Amen and indeed Satan is using music(which is good) to hide the voice of the Holy Spirit, especially these music of nowadays full of beats even if its a Gospel song which causes people to dance instead of getting and receiving the warnings and message in the music. Thank you and may God continue Blessing this ministry has we are striving to be among the 144,000.

  25. godsloveandlaw Says:

So true brother Lee, let’s keep watchful of that music ploy by the deceiver.
