Tithes and Offerings (Part 1 of 2)

September 22, 2012

When we continue on our walk with the Lord, new light will continue to shine in our path. We see things or are revealed things that make us say “Wow, I didn’t know that, thank you Lord!”. Such may be the case with tithes and offerings for many of us. What you will see based on the inspired writings of God’s prophets will likely surprise you. Why? Because the master deceiver himself has done an effective job in hiding this information from us, just one of many deceptions he has planted in God’s remnant church. Not the least of which is passing the offering basket/bag around on the Sabbath!

The truth of this will  make us stop and think , and hopefully start doing the right thing in regards to paying what belongs to God and on the right day.

Most of us are familiar with the frequently used quote regarding tithes. “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”(Mal 3:8-10)

The above words of the Lord have a rebuke,  an instruction and a promise. It’s also interesting to note that these words come in His “sign off” letter, His last book of the Old Testament, the book of Malachi. His summation of some very important issues for us to understand.

In my own example, I was a happy giver into the offering bag every Sabbath up until about 1 month ago ( to help our local church’s utilities and upkeep). Little did I know that this was indeed a serious wrong before the Lord. Don’t get the wrong idea, I am not advocating to stop paying tithes, only that we do it the Lord’s way.  If we do, we are promised great blessings.

We must remember that a certain portion of our money is His and we must return it to God. Ellen White explains “God says that there should be meat in His house, and if the money in the treasury is tampered with, if it is regarded as right for individuals to make what they please of the tithe, the Lord cannot bless. He cannot sustain those who think that they can do as they please with that which is His.” (Counsels on Stewardship, p.106)

How many of us can use the Lord’s blessings? Absolutely we can. The great Giver of all good things can bring each of us a blessing we can be thrilled about. But in order to receive it we must do as He has asked and instructed. Let’s look at His plan in this regard as spoken through His prophets.

On this subject of tithes and offerings we will look at the following  1) Where and who do we pay are tithes and offering’s to?  2) What amount does the Lord require?  3) When are we to pay it? Each of these 3 are very important rules required by the Lord, and if we disobey in any of the 3 , we cannot expect His blessings. Let’s look at number 1.

We shall see that the money is to go to those who are His “shepherds”, ministers who are “feeding ” His flock, ie.the truth for this time, his current message (see the below link).  “God’s ministers are His shepherds, appointed by Him to feed His flock. The tithe is His provision for their maintenance, and He designs that it shall be held sacred for this purpose.” (Phamplets, Vol.1, p.40)

“..a great mistake is made when the tithes is drawn from the object for which it is to be used,–the support of the ministers.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol.9, p.248)

There are many other quotes from EGW that support the general idea that those who teach the true word of God as their profession, explaining the Scriptures, going door to door, or spreading the truth of the Lord in other endeavors, are to be paid from the tithes. However, what do we do when we clearly see that the local pastor isn’t teaching present truth? For information explaining more on present truth see this post https://godsloveandlaw.wordpress.com/2012/03/10/what-is-present-truth/

“There are many precious truths contained in the word of God, but it is “present truth” that the flock needs now.” (Early Writings, p.63)

Note: As we are told to always do the right thing when possible, I believe that when we go to our local church and cannot in good conscience pay our tithes to it , for it’s lack of teaching the Lord’s present truth, we should at least help  in regards to it’s upkeep (utilites, maintenance, etc.). We go every week there and use their water, lights, pews,  take part in their lunchs, etc.

Another good way to know if the pastor is preaching present truth is to ask these questions. Is the pastor teaching ways your church can stay on the straight and narrow path? Is he frequently looking for ways to improve the worship service? Is he admonishing the church at times as necessary.  Or is he teaching peace and safety week after week? Smooth sermons of safety, implying that each and every one who shows up to church needn’t worry, we’re all saved, converted or not.

This is one of the BIG differences between the DSDA and the SDA. The DSDA cannot in good conscience support those who fail to preach the present truth. Time is too short for this dereliction of duty. As we have learned, present truth specifically is the Elijah message, just as our Lord said. One prophet and one only would come before the great and dreadful day of the Lord,  Elijah (Mal. 4:5).

During his ministry bro. Houteff was asked several questions (in his publication called The Answerer) about tithes. Here is a response concerning whether we ourselves can be a “storehouse” and keep the tithes for God’s work.

CANNOT MY HOME BE HIS “STOREHOUSE”?

Question No. 97:

Is it Scriptural for one to retain and personally use his tithe and offerings in order to carry on the gospel work in his own community, according to his own plans?

Answer:

Nowhere in the Scriptures do we find permission to use the Lord’s money at our

Answerer Book 4                                  44

own discretion. The only justification for so doing would be sheer inability, for some reason to send it to the Lord’s “storehouse.” Should one voluntarily, though, engage in such a practice then he would set the wrong example before others. And if following in his lead, others assume  the same right, their course must inevitably  result in seriously handicapping the Lord’s work, bleeding and subverting His treasury, and thus disorganizing His work and reducing the church to a mere shell, while her members are hiring themselves as laborers in the Lord’s vineyard, helping themselves to the Lord’s money, and running without having been sent! What a Babylon that would be!

Though the Lord commands, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse” (Mal. 3: 10), He does not say to bring all the offerings. Thus, He shows that if we would engage in some personal charity or missionary activity, we should sustain it from offerings, not from the tithe.

“Angels keep a faithful record of every man’s work, and as judgment passes upon the house of God, the sentence of each is recorded by his name, and the angel is commissioned to spare not the unfaithful servants, but to cut them down at the time of slaughter….And the crowns they might have worn, had they been faithful, are put upon the heads of those saved by the faithful servants….”Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 198

In the above we see an interesting point. He points out that the tithes go to the storehouse, but if we engage in some type of personal ministry, we can use this from the offerings.

Then we see bro. Houteff address a direct question “To whom should my tithe go?”

” Since I am responsible for the light which is now shining upon my pathway, and since I must help give it to my brethren, should I pay my tithe to the Denomination(SDA) so that the ministry may have money with which to fight both the message and my personal endeavors to reach the people with it, and thereby, working at cross-purposes, only help to keep them in darkness?

Or, should I pay it to the Davidians, the “storehouse” of Present Truth, where it naturally should go to promote the advancement of a heart-searching reformation and to rescue my Seventh-day Adventist brethren from eternal ruin? And as they themselves  are not prepared to meet the Lord (Testimonies,  Vol. 6, p. 371), then how can they adequately prepare the heathen?

In view of all these facts, shall my tithe go to the Seventh-day Adventist denomination in behalf of the heathen or to the sealing message in behalf of the brethren?  If I dare not place my tithe to the support of what I believe to be Present Truth, then how will it be supported, and where else can I conscientiously place my tithe?

Furthermore, if I place it in the Denomination(SDA) to be used largely for the evangelizing of worldlings, rather than in the storehouse of Present Truth to be used for the benefit of my brethren, then am I not doing so to the neglect of my own brethren, and thus denying that I am my brother’s keeper?

And ought I, moreover, obey the ministers’ order to go in search of sheep in the house of Baal, instead of heeding the Lord’s express command to take the heaven-sent remedy to the sin-sick sheep in the house of Israel  (Matt. 10:6)? Which of these two endeavors would be the more sure to gain for me the commendation,  “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord”? Matt. 25:21.

“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his Lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when He cometh shall find so doing.” Matt. 24:45, 46. (parenthesis added) (Answer Book, vol. 4, 42-43)

In our last quote for the answers to where/who should we pay tithes to, EGW says ” The tithe is to be used for one purpose,–to sustain the ministers whom the Lord has appointed to do His work. It is to be used to support those who speak the words of life to the people, and carry the burden of the flock of God.” (Manuscript 82, 1904).

So we see that the tithes should go to the present truth ministers, who actively “speak the words of life” and who “carry the burden of the flock of God” in other words–present truth. The offerings are directed to the same unless you have an active personal ministry of some type, in which case you can provide the offering to this cause. Today’s present truth is one of revival and reformation, is that what is being taught in your church?

Next week we’ll look at answering questions 2 and 3. May the Lord’s light shine upon you concerning this important requirement of God’s. Get ready to discover that the Lord is ready to keep His promise to bless you abundantly.

Church Membership

September 15, 2012

The advice from inspiration is very clear to our SDA church concerning new membership.  Our outlook is — the more we add to the church rolls, the happier is our Lord.  Let’s look into this situation and see how God’s remnant church should work today in this regard.

“Only when the Church is composed of pure, unselfish members, can it fulfill God’s purpose. Too much hasty work is done in adding names to the church roll. Serious defects are seen in the characters of some who join the church. Those who admit them say, We will first get them into the church, and then reform them. But this is a mistake. The very first work to be done is the work of reform. Pray with them,  talk with them, but no do allow them to unite with God’s people in church relationship until they give decided evidence that the Spirit of God is working on their hearts.”  (Review and Herald, May 21, 1901)

“To have your name on the church book does not make you a Christian” (Counsels on Stewardship. p.84).

Before I became aware of the Lord’s last message (Elijah message), I too, was guilty of this error. I had the mindset that we should make a big effort to “bring em in”. I went out in afternoons and went door to door putting church and 3 abn flyers on the doors and gates on neighborhood homes. I had good intentions but the wrong approach.

As we read from the above EGW words, we and especially the pastors and leaders, should get to know the people who request church membership first before inviting them to become a church member. Let me tell you about a  personal example.

I remember after being a member for only a few months, I attended  the early Sabbath school meetings, which were held in the pastors office (usually 10 to 15 members showed up). I notice new people coming in occasionally that were not familiar to me. I struck up a conversation one Sabbath morning with a man named “Gary”. The pastor had not yet arrived and we chatted for a bit. We enjoyed talking and we exchanged phone numbers. He said he had decided to come to the church after watching 3abn and being convicted on the Sabbath truth (I don’t believe he became an official member).

As the weeks went by he would sometimes show up and sometimes not. Our pastor at the time knew him also, even on a first name basis. But I decided to call him after not seeing him for 3 or 4 weeks. We talked at length and I discovered some things I was not aware of. He was a serious chain smoker who just couldn’t quit, he told me. I had compassion, having a  former chewing tobacco habit.  I told him how I overcame it by the “quoting scripture plan”. He liked that idea.

Just a quick note about that plan. As we are well aware, Jesus was our example in all things, and so if we look how Jesus overcame temptation we find He used Scripture. He also used “specific” Scripture for the specific temptation. For instance on the Satan temptation to turn the rock into bread He used Scripture saying we don’t live by bread alone. So if you have a specific sin such as alcohol, tobacco, fornification, etc. then you can find a Scripture that addresses that and quote it out loud to the devil every time he tempts you. I used Psalms 23:1 “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want” (as in wanting tobacco). Then you can forcefully say “be gone from me devil in the name of Jesus!”  after you quote Scripture. It’s powerful, but you must mean it and believe it.  It sure worked for me as I kicked the chewing tobacco habit of 15  years!

Back to Gary, he continued to be sporadic in attendance after that. But I called him again later and asked him why we hadn’t seen him for close to a month. He had issues with his rental unit and the landlord, he said. But I asked him an important question, “Has the pastor or any of the church leaders contacted you since you started coming to church?”  His answer was a flat “No”. Wow, that really threw me for a loop!  He was a new member, who had a serious idol (cigarettes)  and other challenges, yet no one from the church even cared or wanted to get to know him! I wondered how many other “Gary’s” came into the church.

If this situation had been handled by the divine method as given above, Gary as a potential new member of God’s church , would have been visited, talked to, prayed with and even studied with as he was beginning his church relationship. Instead he was on his own to sink or swim as it were. He ended up deserting the church.

Did the leadership care that Gary left? No, they did not. In the book of Ezekiel, the Lord tells us what He will do about these “shepherds” who are neglecting the flock, feeding themselves as it were. Brother Houteff quotes and explains the following Scriptures concerning this.

Ezek. 34:6-10 — “My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, My flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.  Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the Word of the Lord; As I live, saith the Lord God, surely because My flock became a prey, and My flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did My shepherds search for My flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not My flock; therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the Word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require My flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver My flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.”

Let us not fool ourselves any longer.  God cannot be mocked.  He will not for ever forsake His sheep, neither will He for ever retain untrustworthy shepherds herding His sheep.  He will soon discharge them, and will demand that they give an account for their unfaithfulness.  So it is that what a multitude of shepherds have failed to do, one shepherd, even David, will, in God’s hands, get done.

Ezek. 34:13 — “And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.”

In the days of this antitypical David God gathers

Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 2 17

His flock from all the countries where they have been scattered, and brings them into their own land.  God will no longer leave them in the mountains and the hills of the Gentiles.  “Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.  Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days.” Hos. 1:11; 3:5.

Ezek. 34:11-16 — “For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search My sheep, and seek them out.  As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out My sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.  And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.  I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.  I will feed My flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God.  I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.”

“…God has promised that where the shepherds are not true he will take charge of the flock himself.  God has never made the flock wholly dependent upon human instrumentalities.  But the days of purification of the church are hastening on apace.  God will

Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 2 18

have a people pure and true.  In the mighty sifting soon to take place, we shall be better able to measure the strength of Israel.  The signs reveal that the time is near when the Lord will manifest that his fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor.” — “Testimonies”, Vol. 5, pg. 80.

You see the Elijah message tells us to look inward now (to God’s household), instead of outward (trying to save the world). That is why our Lord said about the Elijah  “And  he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse “.  We are directed to look to helping our own now, lest we as His remnant church suffer His curse.

We  have so much work to do right now within our own churches to occupy most of our efforts. Sure, there will come a time very shortly when we’ll go out into Babylon (the people of the world) and call in the great multitude. But our own ship (church) is sinking fast and our efforts must be to save ourselves from ruin. Those of us who are studying our current church leadership have seen subtle infiltrations coming in and it’s rapidly growing! What are we doing holding hands with the other world churches in the World Council of Churches?    http://www.oikoumene.org/en/member-churches.html

Again EGW advises. “While the Lord brings into the church those who are truly converted, Satan at the same time brings persons who are not converted into it’s fellowship. While Christ is sowing the good seed, Satan is sowing the tares. There are two opposing influences continually exerted on the members of the church. One influence is working for the purification of the church, and the other for the corrupting of the people of God.” ( Testimonies  for Ministers, p.46)

And also “After admonition, after time for Bible study and reflection, those who are walking contrary to the Scriptures, and will not reform, should be suspended from the church” (Review and Herald, June 2, 1891)

He must and will come and take the reins. Only those who overcome their cherished sins will be permitted to play a part in the Loud Cry when it swells worldwide. “Only those who have withstood and overcome temptation in the strength of the Mighty One will be permitted to act a part in proclaiming this message when it shall have swelled into the Loud Cry” (Review and Herald, Nov. 19, 1908).

How patient has the Lord been now? It’s been 124 years since the second to last message came to the church(1888 message of righteousness by faith) and it was rejected. It’s been 82 years since the last and final message came to the church (The Elijah message by bro. Houteff in 1930)  and for the most part is rejected (although thank the Lord it is getting out there now and growing).

” But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like launderers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering of righteousness.” (Mal. 3:2-3)

Will you and I be one of those who remain standing after the purification? We can be! All it takes is a true committment and a firm determination to overcome.

So let us look to our own right there in the church  and partake in the work of Elijah, started by bro. Houteff, as a messenger  in calling our people to reform.  The clock is at 5 minutes to 12 so to speak.  We know the devils have sowed  many tares in our church, but as a light bearer, we can shine as a good example of a converted Christian life. A tare can change, by God’s grace.

A portrait of Courage

September 8, 2012

The man slowly and deliberately walked onto the dusty road. His eyes fixed straight ahead on his target. Just minutes before there had been mayhem and upheaval. A sheriff lay shot dead at the hands of a cold blooded killer. The town had been shot up (aka hurrahed) by the trouble making cowboys. Many had “liquored” themselves  up pretty good. What was about to happened was indeed a –portrait of courage. Let’s look into the true scene of a man possessed of  heroic courage that few men have ever possessed.

Four years ago the Lord in his infinite wisdom had drawn me to learn of this man for one main reason– courage. He wanted me learn of his real life story in order to prepare for a work that must be done, which must also involve courage. The books I read concerning this man were numerous, as I couldn’t put them down. The Lord’s objective was accomplished, my interest was keen  and the lessons they taught me fully registered. Let’s examine more of courage in action.

We need to back up the story a bit. The towns had many saloons in those days and in this particular town, at that time, there was a huge high stakes poker game. But as the game got bigger, two well known “bad apples” with notorious reputations came into town, Ben Thompson and his brother Bill, and sat in on the game. Ben Thompson in particular was “the” bad guy who reputation was far and wide. Soon enough, the liquor got the tempers flying. A fight broke out between on Bill Thompson and one of the other players, with Bill being socked to the ground from his chair.

The two brothers got up and cussed their way to the saloon door. The sheriff, C.B Whitney, soon heard about the ruckus and came to the scene. He tried to play the peace maker but shortly after, Bill Thompson, no doubt still high on alcohol and with adrenalin cruising through his veins, said “I’ll get a sheriff if I don’t get anybody else”. Just then he turned to see the sheriff and blasted him at point blank in the sheriff’s breast.

Our young courageous man (hereafter referred as CM) was close near by and held the sheriff in his arms as the dying sheriff said  “I’m done, get me home.” As the commotion started to build, Bill Thompson beelined out of Ellsworth but his brother Ben still hung around. He saddled up and gathered in the streets with his guns yelling at the town. Many bad men from Texas, some witnesses say in excess of 100,  were in the town and joined Ben in his tirade. Now it  seemed the evil men were taunting the “good” men up and down the town, shooting off their guns in defiance, asking if anyone wanted any more trouble, just come outside and get it.

In those days the  “western towns”  were fast and loose. If the sheriff didn’t lay down the law , the law layed down for the bad players. CM was a bystander and observer to all the action. He saw the good intentions of the sheriff but he also saw  serious cowardness follow. Two other law makers, the Marshall and the deputy Marshall, both were called upon by the mayor to take charge of the situation. Both declined. Such great odds against them, they thought twice of risking their lives for peace and justice. CM had also be close enough to hear their excuses spoken to the mayor.

CM, moved by the total failed justice, said to the mayor “Nice police force you got”. The mayor responded, “Who are you??”  “Just a looker on” CM replied. Incensed, the mayor said “Well, don’t talk so much, you haven’t even got a gun”. Then perhaps the most life changing words were spoken by CM. He was to begin a career of one of the most fearless and feared lawman in the old west. CM responded ” it’s none of my business but if it was, I’d get me a gun and arrest Ben Thompson or kill him.”

The coward Marshall was close by and said to the mayor “Don’t pay any attention to that kid , Jim.” Now the mayor was even more incensed and responded to the Marshall ” You’re fired Norton” and he looked over at the deputy Marshall and said “You too , Morco”.He grabbed the Marshall’s badge from his shirt and turned to CM and said “I’ll make this your business. You’re Marshall of Ellsworth. Here’s your badge. Go into Bebee’s and get some guns. I order you to arrest Ben Thompson.”

CM turned and walked into the gun store and picked up a pair of “used”  second hand 45’s. The Bebee clerk recalled how the three (mayor and the two marshalls) stood huddled together on the walkway as CM walked out of the gun shop and passed by them alone and onto the street. Not one of them offered to help the young man, not that he wanted any anyway.

Let’s pick up with the story again. CM now was out in the middle of the street walking  deliberately towards the many, many bad men still on their horses. CM continued on until he came to about 50 yards from their ring leader, Ben Thompson. As mentioned, some witnesses claimed that over 100 bad men were on horses or standing round in the town as CM approached alone. His gun belts at his side clearly visible to all. One false or hesitant move by him could start an avalanche of bullets flying towards him.

CM recalls the moments “I knew what I would do before the mayor pinned Brocky Jack’s badge on my shirt.”  Continuing, “In the first place, I knew better than to walk out of Bebee’s with a gun in my hand. If I had, I would have been filled with lead before I reached the road. But I also knew that, as long as I did not draw, the Texas men would leave it to Ben to make  the play; he would have turned and shot down anyone who dared to cut loose before he opened the ball. Whatever happened must first be between him and me.”

When CM was about 40 yards, Ben called out to the approaching man “What do you want CM?” Apparently Ben was acquainted with him, though not closely. CM  spoke “I want you Ben” as he walked forward. Keep in mind the backup Ben had at that moment, watching for their leader to start the action. Ben kept watching as CM walked closer still. At about thirty yards, many witnesses claim something strange happened. The lone act of courage froze the bad guys (or was it the Lord’s direct hand in observing this young man’s desire for justice?)

The notorious outlaw became submissive to the approaching newly badged young sheriff . He said “I rather talk than fight”. The Texas bad man were no doubt shocked by this turn of events and his words spoken. Afterall it was at least 100 to 1 and none of them want to go to jail. CM  not wanting to lose his edge responded ” I’ll get you either way Ben”. “Wait a minute” said Thompson, “what do you want me to do?”  “Throw your shotgun into the road and put up your hands, and tell your friends to stay out of this play” CM responded.

Finally the overpowering act of courage caused Ben Thompson to say ” Will you stop and let me talk to you?” CM halted. He now knew he could take Thompson, alive or dead. Let’s stop here and note what happened. CM did not love his life more than to see justice and peace be established. Our Lord said “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called son’s of God” (Matt.5:9) Here is a powerful lesson that this one man who courageously dared to do the “right thing” against evil adversaries, had the Lord’s direct undivided attention and therefore His divine help.

CM took hold of the notorious bad man and walked him straight into jail, right in front of all his friends! What a sight. No wonder after this one episode CM’s reputation of a fearless lawman went through out the country. This is just one of dozens of documented (eye witnesses, newspaper accts. etc.) episodes of CM’s courage to do the right thing and enforce justice and the law against the majority. The real man’s name, as many of you no doubt guessed, was Wyatt Earp.

The above description is based from Stuart Lake’s book ” Wyatt Earp-Frontier Marshall”.

Down through history we have seen that our Lord has mostly used men with a particular characteristic in common –courage. All the prophets had it, the three young men had it (saved from the fire), Daniel, David and others. It’s almost like the Lord saying ” step up to the plate and I’ll back you up completely”.  (Isaiah 58:8) “..And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say “here I am.”

In today’s church situation we are facing a small crisis, soon to get bigger. It will require courage, the ability to stand up for the Lord’s truth and His last tough solemn message. The people who will decide to stand on the Lord’s side will be the minority. The general leadership has rejected for the most part the Elijah message, just like it also rejected the Lord’s previous message in 1888 (Righteousness by Faith). Do we stand with the “popular” crowd, the majority? Or do we stand with the few, the minority.

In closing, we must learn to stand for righteousness and justice just like Wyatt Earp did. Our church standing will be shown clearly to the Lord–do we stand on his word as spoken through his prophets, especially His last prophet(to get His seal)?

We don’t know much about Wyatt’s spiritual convictions(whether he came to know the Lord before his death at 80), but the one thing we do know, was that in each and every situation where the odds were stacked highly against him–he came through for law and order, and it prevailed. Standing firm for the right thing in the right situation. And the Lord was his “rear guard” every time, because he took a courageous stand for right doing (righteousness).

The Book Of Amos

September 1, 2012

The book of Amos has some timely and prophetic words that are not as generally read or understood as some of the  major prophets. While it has much solemn warnings  from the Lord it ends happily with a  description of the righteous church kingdom prevailing upon the earth.

Amos was a farmer who turned prophet. His name Amos means “to lift a burden” or “burden-bearer”. In our short study of him, he was like many of our prophets,  a courageous man , willing to speak out against the prevailing sins of his people. Obviously he cared deeply about their spiritual welfare, unlike the vast majority who swept the sins under the rug.

Our prophetess declared these words  “Each of the ancient prophets spoke less for their own time than for ours, so that their prophesying is in force for us.” (3 Selected Messages, p.338) So let us look at what Amos has in store for us today.

God declared that a “prophet” is the revealer of His secrets. So we must be sure that we hear and act upon the words of His anointed prophets. They and only they can accurately predict what God has in store for us. “Surely the Lord God doeth nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7).

Amos, being a prophet, was divinely given some of God’s secrets, and has some clear words for us about what will soon take place in our church. In the first 5 chapters of Amos we read of judgements and also pleadings from the Lord for His people such as, “Seek good and not evil, that you may live; So the Lord God of hosts will be with you, as you have spoken. Hate evil, love good; Establish justice in the gate. It may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joesph.”(Amos 5.14-15).

But as we proceed on we see that  their/our  ways do not reform to His pleadings. The people mostly ignored and disliked his straight testimony.  Those who truly have love in their hearts for their brethren will  tell  the straight truth, desiring that all should be saved and not one perish, just like our Master’s desire (2 Peter 3:9).

As we read on in Amos, we read this contemporary prophesy, the Lord says,  “I hate, I despise your feast days, and I do not savor your sacred assemblies.” (Amos 5:21). Just as in Amos’ day these words are true today.   A while back we made the post called “The church of the routine”, listed under Church. We pointed out how the Holy Spirit is mostly muzzled in our church services today. Kneel at this exact time, stand at this exact time, do this routine at this exact time, time the service to the exact time,  and so on. The Holy Spirit’s spontaneous movements are rarely seen. We need to react more to the Holy Spirit. A brother or sister may receive a vision  right there in the church, and no one knows about it.

Then we get to the last chapter 9. In verse 8 we read, “Behold the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth; yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” says the Lord.”   These words are very applicable for today. He is indeed watching His  “kingdom”.  Through out history there has only been one kingdom He has constantly had His eyes on–His church kingdom.

We see that He will destroy it but not entirely. “For surely I will command, and sift the house of Israel among all nations, as grain is sifted in a sieve; yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.”(Amos 9:9) This appears to be when He goes through His kingdom and “sifts” or judges among His people.  Not one of the righteous will fall , “Yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.”

Let’s summarize verse 8 and 9. First we see that God has His eyes carefully on His church kingdom today and He is not pleased with the “sinful” kingdom. He then must purify His church, but He spares His righteous. The church becomes much smaller, yet pure. This is indeed describing the judgment for the living in His church. The 144,000 are those who are sifted out and remain.(For more information on the 144,000 see our posts listed under “Who are the 144K?”)

Ellen White further confirms this, “In the last vision given me, I was shown the startling fact but a small portion of those who now profess the truth will be sanctified by it and saved.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol 1, p.608)

The next verse is very important. It describes  the ones proclaiming peace and safety, saying in effect the Lord will not bring destruction to His people(church). “All sinners of My people shall die by the sword, who say “The calamity shall not overtake us nor confront us.” (Amos 9:10). These do not believe the Lord will do what He says.

Here is where we need to zoom in closely. The Elijah message is going out right now to us, His people. It proclaims the startling truth that the Lord is soon to secretly come into His churches to begin the beginning phase of the “judgment for the living”. But as this goes out,  it is being fought by many,  particularly the leaders. The sheep, the laity blindly follow along. They are indeed telling people Ezek.9 will not happen or that it happens at the end, in the plaques. Please my brethren be one of those who trust in His word as it states, not in the false peace and safety message.

“The Lord will not do good, neither will He do evil. He is too merciful to visit His people in judgment. Thus “peace and saftey” is the cry from men who will never again lift up their voice like a trunpet to show God’s people their transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p.211)

As we read the final words of Amos we see peace and glory come from the Lord. Our Lord declares  righteousness upon the land. Let’s read verse 11 and 12. “On that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, and repair it’s damages; I will raise up it’s ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old; That they may possess  the remnant of Edom, and all the Gentiles who are called by My name,” says the Lord who does this thing.”

The above is describing  the time of the loud cry. The 144,000 servants of God go to work during the loud cry and bring in the Gentiles. Verses 13-15 says “Behold, the days are coming,” say the Lord, “When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it”

“I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. I will plant them in their land, and no longer shall they be pulled up from the land I have given them,” says the Lord your God.”

Lastly,  Amos shows a beautiful peaceful time where the people are in  “their land” and enjoying the fruit of the land. There is only one place in all the whole world the Lord has ever called His people to -the land of Israel. Here we see that soon our Lord will bring back His people Israel to His (our) land. And no one will  uproot them from there. So as not to have any confusion Ellen White clearly says that we, the SDA church, are the Israel of today (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 164).

In closing, let us be faithful like Amos was, desiring to stand strong and for God’s upright plans, though unpopular at times. If we remain true to the end, a glorious promise is made for us. Amen.

Amos, The Prophet
(From Forerunner Commentary)

Those who critically examine the Bible unanimously agree that Amos wrote the book that bears his name. Some researchers feel that some minor material may have been inserted later by an editor, but few doubt that a Jewish man named Amos was the author. The prophet hailed from Tekoa, a small town about thirteen miles south of Jerusalem in the Wilderness of Judah. Since he was not from a large cosmopolitan city like Jerusalem or Samaria, Amos, shaped by his rural experiences, had a clearer perspective of the evils that he saw as he walked through the cities of Israel. While the Israelites accepted their lifestyle as normal, the prophet recognized it as a perversion and an abomination to God. Amosmeans “burden-bearer,” and his message to Israel, one of continuous judgment and denunciation, was indeed a heavy burden.Because of the distrust between the two peoples, it is ironic that God sent a Jew to warn the Israelites of their impending judgment. God obviously sent the best man available to do the job, though he was not a formally trained prophet. “I was no prophet, nor was I a son of a prophet,” he explains, “but I was a herdsman and a tender of sycamore fruit. Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel'” (Amos 7:14-15).Amos was more than “just a shepherd.” In Amos 1:1 the Hebrew word noqed indicates a keeper or raiser of sheep or goats (see II Kings 3:4), though it is often rendered as “shepherd.” In Amos 7:14 “herdsman” (bowker) refers to large cattle. God inspired two different words to show that he was a breeder of sheep (and maybe of cattle), supplying others with stock, and possibly developing and refining the breeds. Some of Amos’ land may have also been set aside as a sycamore-fig orchard. His ranch seems to have been small enough that he was personally involved in its operation, though he also seems to have been successful enough to take time off to preach in Israel.Judging from the book’s language and style, Amos was also well educated. Scholars judge his use of language as particularly expressive, vivid, and forceful. Far from being an illiterate shepherd, the prophet was a man of refinement and substance, aware of past events and current conditions in Israel and Judah, as well as in the surrounding nations.

Amos wrote at a very significant time in Israel’s history (Amos 1:1). Both kings Jeroboam II of Israel (793-753 BC) and Uzziah of Judah (791-739 BC) enjoyed long and prosperous reigns. His prophecy can be dated before 750 BC, since Uzziah’s son, Jotham (750-731 BC), who reigned as co-regent with his father for eleven years, is not mentioned.

The phrase “two years before the earthquake” helps to narrow the book’s date. Archeological findings unearthed at Hazor in northern Palestine show that an unusually strong earthquake occurred about 760 BC. If so, Amos prophesied in about 762 BC. The phrase seems to limit his prophesying to this particular year, suggesting that his prophetic activity was very short.

Many historians have concluded that 722 BC—forty years later—was when Assyria marched on Israel. Beginning with Amos’ warning message, God in His mercy provided His people with a forty-year period of trial and testing during which they could repent. History records, however, that Samaria fell and her survivors were dragged into captivity in 718 BC.

Tradition holds that Amos died a violent death at the hands of Jeroboam II, but no historical records have confirmed this claim. However, the prophet left a powerful message of warning and urgency that still rings with truth and fervor.  (from www.bibletools.org)

A Spiritual Health Test

August 25, 2012

Recently I recieved in the mail an advertising mailer that said “Please go to our site for a financial checkup”. Then I got to thinking why isn’t there mailers,  or even online sites for a spiritual checkup? Afterall what’s more important then your eternal future destiny? We as Christians must have real concern for our brothers and sisters. Are they right with God? Or are they doing as so many around the world are, going through the motions, thinking that by just showing up to church on the Sabbath every week they’re covered? Let’s look at a straight test  that will help you to know where you stand, Biblically speaking.

Here is the test. Add the points up after you’re  done then you can see the score and find the result. Get a pen or pencil to mark your answers as you go down the questions, or print it out. Be honest. It’s a reality check not a wish list test. Then you’ll know better your condition.

1) I know all the 10 Commandments, at least the short version. I am able to repeat them 1 to 10.

A)  Yes

B)   No

2) The Sabbath has come, however as I leave to go to service I  buy gas. Is this acceptable to God?

A) Yes: Because the Lord knows I must go to church and will allow me to buy it because it’s for a good cause.

B) No: I should not do it, Friday is the day to prepare for Sabbath.

3) Which is the correct answer to the following question :  The Sabbath has come and a  dear friend has called me right before service. She has flown into town to see me. She’s at the airport. The response I give is:

A) I tell her I am very sorry but it is the Sabbath service now and therefore I cannot drive to pick her up right now. I can see her after church , and we can fellowship together at my home.

B) I tell her I’ll be right over, God understands  this as a special circumstance.

4) A friend at work, who I sits next to me on my job, is chatting with me. As she chats I notice her taking several boxes of company paper clips and putting them into her purse, I do the following.

A) Nothing. It’s her business. The company has ton’s of them. Our friendship is way more important to me.

B) I gently mention to her that it’s the wrong thing to do. I would put that back if I were her. Even though I know this may not set well with her.

5)  A dear brother at church sits next to me before service. He starts talking to me about the week  and his different endeavors he’s done. I listen then do the following:

A) I casually nod, but remain silent. We’re in God’s holy sanctuary and I do this as a silent reminder to him. If he doesn’t get the message, I quietly tell him we’ll talk after service.

B) I engage in the chat  because I think it’s ok because service hasn’t started.

6) I’ve had a hard day at work, I come home and after dinner, I relax on the sofa and watch TV for a few hours. I do this almost each week day of the week for relaxation and enjoyment. I believe this is fine and acceptable before God.

A) Yes

B) No

7) I read the Bible during the week approximately:

A) 7 or more times

B)  3 times

A) Everyday (auto, office, or home)

B) Not very much, only occasionally.

C) Never (when it’s in my control)

10) Sometimes I pray to the Lord, and then I do the following:

A) Go on my way, I really don’t think much more about it. I’ve done my duty and feel better.

B)  I clearly remember it, infact if it is very special to me, I’ll write it down to remember it. I wait and watch for a response back from the Lord, a clear specific answer or yes, no, or not now.

11) Father’s day is tommorrow, I think of my Dad. However we haven’t spoken in the last year because I was really wronged by him and still can’t let that go. So on Father’s day, I do the following:

A)  I say a prayer for him, and think of him much of the day. The Lord knows my heart and my thoughts of him this day.

B) I pick up the phone  and call him. I remember it’s the 5th Commandment. I swallow my pride.

12) There is a brother who want’s to do a bible study with me. I am very busy so I do the following:

15) While I was driving today a man cut me off on the road, I became  very mad. I found myself yelling and even swearing, shortly after I do the following:

A) Calm down and proceed on. He was wrong and deserved my outburst.

B) I feel I have done a wrong before the Lord, I quietly apologize to Him.

16) A close brother or sister, whom I have known for quite a while hasn’t shown up to church service for a few weeks. I do the following:

A) I keep them in my prayers knowing God will take care of them.

B)  In additon to prayer, I pick up the phone or email them. Letting them know I am concerned.

A) I chuckle and think this is a nice mistake. The store has millions, no big deal. I put it away.

B) I immediately get out and walk back to the cashier, explaining that they made a mistake and I give it back.

20) If  I were to download the free helpful Bible software called ESword (translates the Bible from the original Hebrew and Greek words) and use it regularly for a couple months,  getting good benefit from it, I would do the following:

A) Nothing, it’s free, no worries.

B) I really appreciate the benefit  and want to donate. It’s the right thing to do. Although it’s free to me, it’s not to them.

21) A true converted Christian life means the following:

A) Becoming baptized and living the best we can. Our sins are unfortunate and our current nature, but until the Lord comes we’ll continue in them. The main thing is that we go to church every Sabbath and pray often. Our Lord understands our weakness and will excuse our sins even if we haven’t overcome them in this life.

B) Our past life of sins and pleasures of this world are over. We daily live for him, remembering His holy 10 Commandments and applying these principles to our life daily. We don’t consciously sin if we can help it. If we do we feel terrible and repent. Our love for our Lord and His Law is so great that we sometimes sigh and cry for the sins in our life and those in the church.

22) I want to be known as a:

A)  A zealous and continually striving Christian. Never complacent with my walk and always wanting to improve and learn.

B)  A lukewarm satisfied Christian. I trust the Lord has done all that is needed in my life. My walk isn’t what really matters, it’s what He did for me that counts.

————————————-Test Results——————————

19-22 =  You appear to be heading in the right direction. Keep it up. Don’t stop striving. As we know the road is straight and narrow, and you are showing a real desire to stay on it.

13-18 =  There should be some soul searching done in your life. Prayer, studies, commitment should be increased. A closer examination of your walk is needed. Your risk of being “lukewarm” is higher than it should be.

0 – 12 = God’s word and way appear to be at odds with your walk. This is a serious condition. Seriously consider re-commiting to our Lord. Increase your desire to know His word and His way more closely. Your condition could be under the  Satan delusion of the all too common over-belief in “grace” instead of concentrating on obedience more.

Notes on this test.

This test is based primarily on Rev. 3:14-22. In these words of the Lord there is a direct message to us, His last church called Laodiceans. This message is a strong warning to not  be lukewarm or self satisfied. We are also told to be “zealous”. When we become zealous in doing the right thing our walk indeeds grows. With that in mind the test gives high scores to those who put into practice,  the Lord’s above words. Head knowledge alone of the right doctrines won’t save us. Only when we “overcome” with the power of the Holy Spirit will we be “granted to sit with our Lord upon His throne”(Rev.3:21).  Let us strive to do as our prophetess said, “It is the essence of all right faith to do the right thing at the right time.” (Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church, Vo.6, p.24)

“The Special Resurrection” (Part 2 of 2)

August 18, 2012

As we who have studied the Elijah message in depth know, the prophesied “Elijah” to come was indeed Victor T. Houteff (VTH).  As such we must search his  word carefully on any subject as we would any of the prior prophets. Brother Houteff spoke much about the special resurrections. His purpose as Scripture pointed out was to “reconstitute all things” (Matt.17:11).  This meant that he was to straighten or strengthen our interpretations of Scriptures and SOP in regards to the knowledge of the great and dreadful day of the Lord, the upcoming premillennial church kingdom on earth, and other matters we need to know in these last days. In this study we’ll look at the pertinent work he did concerning our subject matter.

Before we begin this part of the study let’s take important note of the following. VTH had published a question and answer series known as  “The Answerer”. In the beginning days of his work, many SDA had some good and tough questions that he addressed. Some were questions that addressed controversies in his views versus Scripture and EGW’s views. Many indeed tried to trap him or stump him, however he never shunned them , rather he  published them for all the public  to see. (Here is a link to see all the Q and A in the Answerer http://www.shepherds-rod.org/answerers/index%20answerer.html )

Importantly, we can learn how he handled very difficult and even seemingly contradictions. Let’s look at the following . He says the following in answer to question no.74 (Answerer, vol. 3), “No rational person who believes Paul’s writings as a part of the Holy Writ can honestly convince himself that Paul would at one moment uplift the law and at the next moment tread it down. Decidedly, therefore, one’s interpretation of the apostle’s writings must be such as to make them consistent.”

Responding to question no. 65, he says “Now, if we are to arrive at the truth, we must interpret the statement in Early Writings and the one in Matt:20:16, in a way to harmonize with the one in Isaiah 60:11,22, Zechariah 20:16, 13:8,9.: The Great Controversy p.665, and other passages…”

So we can clearly see that rather than say divine writings are sometimes unable to be reconciled, VTH makes it plain that we should seek to “harmonize” them with each other, if we are to arrive at the truth.  Parts of the Truth scroll can’t be ripped out and replaced, it must be rolled out further to see more illuminating light. What is written by each of the prior prophets must stand as truth, and if need be,  made to harmonize with the following prophets. Such harmonization is indeed divine and a real beauty to behold, for example Daniel and Revelation, Isaiah and Ezekiel, etc.

Then we have this clear statement,  Let us remember always to observe the inviolable rule that an interpretation of one inspired statement must harmonize with all other related statements.”(Answerer , vol. 3, question 56)

And VTH also said, “While Ezekiel calls them “men,” John says they are “virgins.” (Rev. 14:4.) Now, if we should take the position that Ezekiel means men only, then we can as well say, John means women only. Can it be possible that one writer should contradict the other? No indeed.”(Shepherd’s Rod. vol. 2, p.167)

And lastly,  in regards to the harmony of all the phophets we read “Inspiration, moreover, always brings messengers of God into perfect harmony, never into division.” (The Answerer, Vol. 1, P.50)  So here we see that the messengers must bring their message into harmony with each other. Never can we see a phophet follow another and say ” Disregard, what the prior messenger said, it is wrong, this is how it will be”. No, the message must corroborate each other, as bro Houteff said “perfect harmony”.

Let’s now turn to VTH’s writings about our subject matter, and it’s found in his first book. (Again my comments start with —)

Shepherd’s Rod. Vol.1. P.23 – After quoting Early Writings, p.285, and GC, p.637, VTH says the following   “This makes it positive that the resurrected Sabbath keepers come forth in the special resurrection of Daniel 12. This is the time when great hailstones are doing their destructive work (7th plaque)…The resurrected Sabbath keepers did not live during the time of the plaques, for they were resurrected at the time of the seventh plaque, so that they hear the announcement of the day and hour of Jesus’ coming.”

—- Here we see that VTH makes a clear, simple and concurrent statement with EGW. This compliments perfectly with what we learned in our previous study of EGW’s GC.637 statement of the second special resurrection, and such as Mrs. Hastings time of resurrection for example. So this first quote of VTH fully supports her light on what she said. A solid conformation.

Shepherd’s Rod Vol. 1, P.23-26 – Next we see VTH identify EGW as being with the 144,000, not one of them. After quoting Early Writings, p.40, VTH says “There is no contradiction in this statement, for the angel told her that she, with the 144,000, meaning she is one with them but not one of them. She will doubtless be with them for she may be termed as the mother of them…”

—-We should note that VTH himself , will most likely be (by God’s grace) one “with” the 144,000. One of those workers who take up the work again. Further, according to the message, he may very well be the “anti-typical king David” in the pre-mil. kingdom.

Shepherd’s Rod, Vol.1, P.48“Speaking of this mixed resurrection, Daniel says: ‘And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.’ Then there will be some righteous included who lived and witnessed the crucifixion; also those who crucified Him, and pierced Him, for, (Rev. 1:7) “Behold He cometh with the clouds:And every eye shall see Him, and they also which  pierced Him.” Therefore the resurrection which witnessed of the power of God to these murderers of His Son, typified the just who are raised in the mixed (special) resurrection.

—-So from the above we notice a few things. 1) it is clear VTH connects Daniel 12:2 to the second special  resurrection because he backs up what EGW said in GC p. 637, he also notes it as a “mixed” resurrection. So at this time, he further identified and described more on the second, or as he called it, mixed resurrection. 2) We can see that what is taking place here is a describing of a unique group. We learn that some righteous ones who “witnessed” the Lord’s brutal crucifixion, will rise in this mixed resurrection. Perhaps this is to show direct shame to those who mocked and derided our Lord at this terrible event, for the evil persecutors will recognize these righteous counterparts. This confirms EGW’s visions of both the good and bad raised in this second special resurrection. Again solid conformation on the second special resurrection.

Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 1, P.186“We as a people, have been honored by heaven with a special message for the world in this generation. We call this message “The Third Angel’s Message”….. The chief and only purpose of these doctrines being to prepare a peculiar people to God’s own glory and honor; a people to meet the Lord without tasting death, or, to rise in the special resurrection of Daniel 12.”

—-Here brother Houteff makes a clear point to us as SDA. Those who truly obey and walk with the Lord will be raised prior to His coming, or never die(the 144,000). This quote again supports the light which he had at this time (second special resurrection).

Shepherd’s Rod, Vol.2 P. 146“At this time, Christ (Michael) shall stand up for His people, and every one shall be delivered who is found written in “The Book.” Thus God’s people need not fear in the time of trouble.

And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” (Daniel 12:2) It will be noticed that the resurrection foretold in this Scripture is mixed— some are of the righteous, while others are of the wicked. Therefore, this is a special resurrection, and independent of the one referred to in 1Thessalonians 4:16, 17, for it plainly says : “The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first” Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

John also makes it clear that the righteous only are called forth at the coming of the Lord, for he says: “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power.” (Rev. 20:6) Consequently , the mixed resurrection must precede the one at the coming of Christ in the clouds. Those who awake to “everlasting contempt” must be those who pierced Christ, thus fulfilling the following Scripture: “Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced him.” (Rev 1:7)

—Now we have clear evidence that the second special resurrection, is not at the time of the “first resurrection” of Rev.20:6, because it precedes it. However, it does appear that while both of these resurrections happen within or at the end of the 7th last plaque, there is a time period difference in them. We don’t know how long, most likely only days or weeks.

Continuing with Shepherd’s Rod P. 146, we read “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament;and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.”(Daniel 12:3). They who are “wise” are the ones who shall “understand”, and they shall turn many to righteousness; thus they shall shine as stars “forever and ever.” These are not those who resurrected in the special resurrection, for it would be after the close of probation, and about the end of the seventh plaque, just shortlybefore the coming of the Lord. Thus the resurrected ones would have no chance to turn any to righteousness. Therefore, those who shine as stars are the 144,000, and all who shall have a part in the closing work of the gospel.

—Now we’re getting a lot more deeper and the Truth scroll unrolls with new light! This is quite revealing. First, we can see without any doubt that VTH still shows the light which he knows, that is of the second special resurrection. But we can see the beginning glimmer of light upon him, in regards to the first special resurrection, when he states “and all who shall have a part in the closing work of the gospel.” He could not realize it at the time, but he was identifying some selected “first” special resurrected ones who will be “with” the 144,000, such as EGW and himself(by God’s grace).

—So we can now make the following preliminary time line.

  1. After Ezekiel 9, the first special resurrection takes place including EGW, VTH and others- “workers”.  Selected bad people are raised here as well.
  2. During or at the end of the 7th plaque the second special resurrection takes place, it includes the good and bad. It’s “mixed”. It precedes the next one(#3).
  3. The “first” resurrection of Rev.20:6 takes place at the coming of Jesus in the clouds. These are the righteous only( no bad people in this). The final resurrection before He comes in the clouds.

Shepherd’s Rod, Vol.1, P.132 (EZEKIEL 4 CHART) –- In this chart it clearly shows bro. Houteff pointing out that a special resurrection takes place IN the time of the 7th plaque. This is undeniable. Even though we know new light came to him later, this was divinely conferred to him that “a” special resurrection takes place within the 7th plaque, no doubt as we know, it is the second special resurrection.

Shepherd’s Rod, Vol.1, P.219 – “And I heard a voice in heaven say unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth.” Note that after the sealing of the 144,000 there would be some who would die in the Lord (saved), for the scripture reads “from henceforth”, meaning from the time this company was sealed.”

The 144,000 are living saints, to be translated without seeing death. “The Lord has shut them in. Their destination is inscribed-GOD,NEW JERUSALEM.” Testimonies to Ministers, p.446. Therefore, those who die“in the Lord” must be of those who are saved, after the separation (in the time of the harvest) under which Isa.52:1 and Zeph 3:13, are fulfilled. Those that die at that time are perhaps those who cannot stand the hardships while the judgments of God are falling upon the land in the time of the plaques. While God clears the way for the seven last plaques by laying some of His people asleep in the grave … The predicted event for the purification of God’s church is by no means a small one. Those who cannot undergo the trial are laid in their graves, while the 144,00 remain and will escape…”

—Again, this is very revealing. We note that this “dying in the Lord” takes place after the separation , meaning after Ezekiel 9 church judgment. These “saved” who experience death, are not part of the 144,000, because VTH says the 144,000 remain and escape. Who are they? Some would say it’s some of the Great Multitude(those called out of Babylon). At this point we don’t have enough light to say with certainty. It appears they cannot be those who are raised in the first special resurrection(“those with the 144,000”) because it makes no sense God would raise them up only to have them die shortly after again.  Selected wicked ones are raised and will die again shortly thereafter, but we can’t see that happening with those “with” the 144,000, the ones who are to “take up the work once more”.

Shepherd’s Rod, Vol.2, p.235 – “Why are the first paid last, and the last first? Answer – The pay God’s servants receive is eternal life, and is characterized by the penny. Therefore, those who are granted the assurance of a never ending life first, are those who were hired last, and according to the parable, it was the company called at the 11th hour. They are those who are marked or sealed by the man with the writer’s ink horn of Ezekiel 9, or as John calls him, the angel with the seal of God; and he sealed, or marked, 144,000. (See Rev. 7). The glorious company is the first who are granted the assurance of never tasting death. (See “the Shepherd’s Rod, Vol.1, pp22-24) Thus they are paid first but those who were called early in the morning ( Israel after the flesh) are to be resurrected (the righteous) when Christ comes in the clouds, at which time they shall be given immortality. “So the last shall be first, and the first, last”. For this reason, those who are sealed and saved by the Third Angel’s Message since 1844, are resurrected in the special resurrection before Christ comes. (See Daniel 12:2, Early Writings, p.285)

—We see here that bro. Houteff makes his first note on the righteous of Israel being raised. They are raised in the “first” resurrection (Rev. 20:6).They are those original Israelites who were righteous. Who are these specifically? Could Apostle Paul be one of them? Look at this statement – Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air…” (1 Thess.4:17)

— Also in (Hosea 6:1-3) we read ” Come, and let us return to the Lord; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up. After two days He will revive us; On the third day he will raise us up, that we may live in His sight….He will come to us like the rain, like the latter and former rain  to th earth.”  Here’s another verse that indicates a “raising” by the Lord, and that “He will come to us”, indicating a raising here on earth because in the other raising (Rev.20:6) we “go to Him”.

—In keeping with the light he had, he notes that those sanctified by the Three Angels message come forth prior to “Israel” in “the” special resurrection. So even though he had beginning glimmers of light on two special resurrections he still referred to them as “the”.

—Let us stop here for a moment to address an issue about limited light. Some may ask why didn’t VTH have the light on the first special Resurrection like he had on the second at this time? Remember this was written in the very early years of his ministry. Not to worry,  he himself explains “There has never been given so much light on any one prophetic event since the world began, as the Lord has given on this particular subject that is set forth in this publication (the sealing of the 144,000, and the slaughter in the church in connection with the harvest, though it has not all been published.)” (Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 1, p.220)

—VTH clearly points out that more light was to come “though it has not all been published”. Prophets are led along as the scroll unrolls, they write that which is divinely given and at the time it is divinely given. Speaking of this fact, EGW clears it up beautifully Men do not fully understand what God would accomplish by the work which He gives them to do: They do not comprehend, in all it’s bearings, the message which they utter in His name.” (GC, P. 343) Naturally this applied to EGW as well. This study being a prime example, she didn’t fully comprehend  about the special first resurrection, as Brother Houteff did.

—That concludes the pertinent VTH quotes from the Shepherd’s Rod volumes. Let’s now look at a Tract booklet reference.

BEHOLD I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW, P.41-42 (Tract #9) – “The “mountain”, the kingdom of God, clearly then, is begun with the first fruits of the living (the 144,000) and followed by the second fruits (the great multitude – Rev.7:9), and is completed with the first and second fruits of the dead- the 120 (those who received the Spirit on the day of Pentecost), plus those who arose with Christ (Matt. 27:52,53), plus the great multitude

who accepted Him after the Pentecost (Acts 5:14), plus all who awake to everlasting life in the resurrection of Daniel 12:2, plus the remaining dead of all ages, who rise on the great resurrection day (Rev. 20:6), also those of Ezekiel 37:1-14.”

—We see the total different types of all those raised in the different resurrections. The light shown here is showing identification or labeling of the saints.

—We shall now look at the very informative Timely Greetings publications. These were written after the Shepherd’s Rod volumes, consequently the unrolling of the divine scroll was further along.

Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 7 – 3– Dan. 12:4 “But thou,O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the end of time: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”

Daniel was told to shut and seal the book even to the end of time. The book, therefore, was not for the understanding of the people before the time of the end.” So, then, when the book is unsealed and understood we may know that the time of the end is come.”

—This is very telling. Once these verses of Daniel’s prophecies are to be clearly understood, it signals we are at the very end. We do indeed now understand the book of Daniel through brother Houteff’s writings (“reconstituting all things”) .

Timely Greetings, Vol.2, No. 7 (10 -15) – After quoting Dan.1, VTH says “At that time (that is at the time the king of the north comes to his end and none help him) shall Michael stand; and at the same time shall be trouble such as never was even to that very time. Only God’s people, who have their names written in the book, will be delivered. None other.”

Continuing down to no. 7 –11, we read “ Dan. 12:2 – “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to everlasting shame and contempt.”

Here we are told that in the time of trouble these arise, some to live forever and some to die again.”

Do you now realize that not only the time of trouble is at the door, but even this special resurrection? Do you actually see that in the time of trouble, while the living saints are being delivered these dead who rise “to everlasting life,” are also delivered from their graves? Do you realize that this time of trouble is in “the great and dreadful day of the Lord,” the day which the promised Elijah announces? …… (after speaking of John’s vision of the resurrection in Rev.20:6 and Paul’s of Thess. 1) VTH says The apostle Paul obviously speaks of the same resurrection as the Apostle John because in it only the holy ones are raised. Both Paul’s and John’s descriptions make clear that these arise at the commencement of the thousand years. This we see from the facts that they lived with Christ a thousand years, and that they were caught up to meet the Lord in the air, that they were on the way to live with Christ during the thousand years, not Christ with them.”

—Let’s recap here. We see a couple clear points. One, that VTH says that “IN” the time of trouble the resurrected ones from Dan.12:2 are to rise. We know that the time of trouble starts right after Ezekiel 9, but it also extends right up to the end of the plaques. So this is inconclusive as to whether he means the first or second special resurrection. But he confirms that  1 Thess. and Rev. 20:6 resurrections are one and the same, known as the “first” resurrection, where only the righteous awake, and is the very last resurrection as Jesus comes in the clouds . This appears the most populated of the resurrections.

–Some may say “ I’m confused because the Bible specifically calls this (Rev.20:6) the “first” resurrection, therefore the “special resurrection” cannot be one. There can only be one “first” because that is the label of Rev.20:6.”  Not exactly right. Remember the real “first” resurrection ( meaning several people at once) was when Jesus arose and all those (some say thousands) rose as well(Matt 27:52-53). So title and descriptions are relative and contectual.

VTH continues “ Now to line up all the resurrections, we must take into account also the one in Ezekiel”

Ezek.37:1, 11-14 – “The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones….Then He said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts. Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God ; Behold O My people, I will open your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I opened up your graves, O My people, and brought you up out of your graves, and shall put My Spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then ye shall know that I the Lord hath spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord.”

In this resurrection only God’s own people, Israel, arise with no sinner among them. Moreover, these do not meet the Lord in the air; they are taken to the land of Israel, Palestine. This resurrection, therefore, is not the same as the resurrection of 1 Thessalonians, of the Revelation, or of Daniel 12. It must be a separate one.”

—The above is new information and new light is shown.  Most noteworthy is that we see that these can only be brought up in the first special resurrection because VTH mentions that they are not to be brought up in the “Daniel 12” resurrection (meaning the second special resurrection ). Here we see the great scroll being rolled out into new light! For the very first time VTH mentions a new  special resurrection by declaring that these are raised “separate” from the resurrections of Daniel 12 and Rev.20:6. God’s divine revealing had come.

—- Here we need to discuss what appears at first glance, difficult and even contradictory statements. If we look back to the quote from Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 2, p.235, we notice that VTH in explaining the parable says “(Israel after the flesh) are to be resurrected (the righteous) when Christ comes in the clouds……” Now we notice the above regarding Ezekiel 37 resurrection in which VTH says “In this resurrection only God’s own people, Israel, arise with no sinner among them. Moreover, these do not meet the Lord in the air; they are taken to the land of Israel, Palestine. This resurrection, therefore, is not the same as the resurrection of 1 Thessalonians, of Revelation, or of Daniel 12, It must be a separate one.”

—Our answer appears to be in understanding the actual quote of Ezekiel 37:11-14. In reading verse 11 , the last part says “Our bones are dry, our hope has wandered, and we are cut for our parts.” This was something that struck me as strange, especially the last part of that verse–”we are cut off for our parts”. This just didn’t make sense as a clear translation. As we are well aware, some translations are off the mark and we have various interpretations by many sources. E-sword, which has the translations of all the words to Hebrew and Greek , was quite revealing. That questionable translation is taken from the word “gazar” and thus translated to say”we are cut off for our parts”. However the word gazar means to cut, to divide, and decree. Then we discovered that the same word (gazar) was used in Job 22:28 as meaning “decree” , Esther 2:1 “decreed” and in Psalms 136:13 as “divided”. So the word apparently has several meanings and applications.

—-So with the above understanding of the verse we can read it to say “Our bones are dry, our hope has wandered, we have been decreed and divided” or similar words.  With this understanding we can see that they lay there awaiting a decree (the call to rise) and are also divided. For there seems to be two divided groups among them that lay asleep and therefore, under inspiration, VTH mentions the two Israel groups, 1) those who arise in the first resurrection “they are taken to the land of Israel, Palestine.” 2)And those who are “Israel after the flesh” who are resurrected when Christ comes in the clouds (the last ones in the parable). In this way the whole house of Israel is indeed raised prior (the first special resurrection) or at the coming of Christ (Rev.20:6). The two groups are in “the land of Israel” as God prophesied, before being translated to “know that I am the Lord”. God’s word is indeed deep, yet can be found out and understood if we search it out as we would for golden treasure.

VTH continues —“Let us come back to – “Daniel 12:1-3 – “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great Prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time Thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament: and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.”

In these three verses several things clearly stand out: 1) Only those whose names are written in the books are delivered: there are therefore no “foolish” ones among them. 2) Those who are resurrected, however, are mixed, both foolish and wise come up. 3) The statement,”and they that be wise (implying that some be foolish) shall shine as the brightness of the firmament” indicates that these “wise” ones are from among the raised. 4) That if the wise are among the resurrected and turn many to righteousness, then they must be resurrected during probationary time, in the time of salvation.”

—Let’s recap the above. In point number 1) this is  plain and true. The only ones “delivered” (meaning saved) are found written in the heaven books, no foolish ones are found there. On number 2) this has been proven in our study, both for the first and second special resurrection. On 3) and 4) we see VTH confirm the new light he is now aware of, that of the first special resurrection (“must be raised during probationary time”). Obviously he knew of the prior stance he made in backing up EGW on the second special resurrection, but now he announces a probationary  special resurrection(first) that occurs before the plaques start.

Your work, my work, will not cease with this life. For a little we may rest in the grave, but, when the call comes, we shall, in the kingdom of God, take up our work once more.” (Testimonies, Vol.7, P.17)

—In the above quote he sees EGW’s statement as a clear indication of the first special resurrection. Obviously he saw this in his earlier writings but was divinely held back from commenting on it at that time, as to it’s real meaning. Note: VTH obviously preferred to call the first special  resurrection– the probationary resurrection.

After quoting Daniel 12:4, 10, and then the parable about the wise virgins (Matt 25:1-4) VTH continues “Here we see that the wise are those who take extra oil, extra Truth that lightens the rest of their way. Finally, it plainly appears that this mixed resurrection is a test; that is, they are all given the opportunity to be wise, to turn many to righteousness, but only a part of them do so. Some of them again fall into sin, and therefore they awake to shame and everlasting contempt (everlasting disobedience), but the wise awake to everlasting life, never again to die. This plainly shows that those who give themselves to wickedness up to the time they die, would not turn to righteousness even though they be given a second chance. The extra oil (Truth for this time) is what decides each one’s destiny. The wise shall embrace the “additional Truth”, while the foolish will not. Sin is indeed a mystery!”

— He is aware of the first special resurrection now, and he points out that those who come forth in first special resurrection, being both good and bad people, are then “tested” once more in front of the angels and mankind, and again proven that they have not changed. The good remain good and the bad remain bad, despite second chances.

Timely Greetings, Vol.2, No.42,P.29 – VTH quotes Dan.12:1. Then says “And at that time” – that is, at the time the king of the north comes to his end (Dan.11:45)–shall Michael stand up and deliver His people, the Church, all who are written in the Book. What else takes place?–”

Dan.12:2 –” And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”

Here is projected a resurrection of a mixed multitude, wicked and righteous, foolish and wise. This resurrection, then, is not the pre millennial “first resurrection,” nor the post millennial resurrection of the wicked (Rev.20:5-6), but a special one. If the wise who turn many to righteousness are of the resurrected of this resurrection, and if they shine as stars forever and ever, then this special resurrection takes place in probationary time.

—Again we see that VTH has clear light on the “probationary” special resurrection (the first). Here would be those, as we mentioned, the “workers” who take up the work once more (the good) to “turn many to righteousness”. Also those whom EGW saw at the conference that will have to suffer the seven last plaques, and the slave master for example (the bad).

Final summary

After presenting all the evidence from Scripture, EGW and VTH we can see that the inspired writings appear very consistent. There appears two special resurrections which occur after the Ezekiel 9 church judgment (purification) and before out Lord’s coming in the clouds. As we’ve mentioned this study has been discussed  for many years, hopefully we’ve added a little more light for consideration . Of note, it can clearly be shown that EGW didn’t have clear light on the first special resurrection like she did the second, she did make statements concerning another resurrection apart from the Daniel resurrection, yet fully did not realize it’s time and place. VTH clearly showed that he saw 3 resurrections 1) The probationary resurrection (first special) 2) The Daniel 12 resurrection (second special) 3) The final resurrection at Jesus’ coming in the clouds (Rev. 20:6) (1 Thess 4:16,17).

When we have difficulty in understanding the scroll, we must humbly kneel in prayer for divine guidance and understanding. The “weight” of evidence must be taken into account. This we hope, has been done in this study.

As Apostle Paul said ” Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15). This has been the purpose of this study, to prepare us as a workman in spreading God’s truths.  May the Lord continue to guide us into all truth.

What we’ve tried to do here with this study is follow the Lord’s counsel through brother Houteff’s —“Let us remember always to observe the inviolable rule that an interpretation of one inspired statement must harmonize with all other related statements.”(Answerer, question 56). The truth  has always been there in the inspired statements, it’s just  that sometimes they need to be more closely examined, to see the whole picture clearly.

Let us close with the wonderful and timely words of our beloved prophetess  “Wonderful possibilities are open to those who lay hold of the divine assurances of God’s word. There are glorious truths to come before the people of God. Priviledges and duties which they do not even suspect to be in the Bible will be laid open before them. As they follow on in the path of humble obedience, doing His will, they will know more and more of the oracles of God.” (Testimonies for the Church , Vol. 8, P.322)

“The Special Resurrection” (Part 1 of 2)

August 11, 2012

Special Resurection

Note: This post is directed primarily to SDA and DSDA members.

Not since we did the Elijah posts have I looked forward to sharing this post. Excited and at times mentally stretched, I have prayed earnestly to get this completed. Our Lord has not disappointed. As His Spirit of Truth has guided, we shall look into this most unusual and fascinating topic – The Special Resurrection.

For many years, even decades this topic has been discussed among the brethren, particularly among SDA and Davidian SDA. DSDA often found themselves at odds with SDA members over it, and even among other Davidians. One thing I want to make perfectly clear —This is not a sanctifying issue. This means that whether you believe in this special resurrection or not, even if you  have another view on how it takes place, that’s your prerogative. I respect all other views.

What we’ve tried to do is search out all the relevant quotes from Scripture, Ellen White, and Brother Houteff. We’ve looked at them closely and made comments and observations as to the clear plain words and meanings. Then at the end we’ll summarize the end view and how we see it all coming together,  bro Rob.

This subject had its origins in the following Scripture:

“At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to everlasting shame and some to everlasting contempt. Those who  are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” (Daniel 12.1-3)

Then as our prophetess came along she expounded on those words, and posted more descriptive words about it. However as we are so very well aware,  she prophesied that “somebody would come” after her in the power and spirit of Elijah(Testimonies to Ministers, p.475, 1 Selected Message, p.412 *). This somebody, as the truth scroll unrolled further, added the final words to this subject so that we could see all the bright clear light on it. He did his job, he “reconstituted all things”(Matt 17:11) and certainly the special resurrection is no exception. (* in both the aforementioned EGW references, be aware the SDA leaders have added their own additions to her comments, denying what she said is what she meant)

Let’s look at the individual Ellen White (EGW) statements. (note: the following was done in the word office format, as the study progressed. So as not to get confused my comments began as —-)

GREAT CONTROVERSY P.637 – “Graves are opened, and “many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth …. awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Daniel 12:2. All who have died in the faith of the 3rd angels message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who kept His law. “They also which pierced Him” (Rev. 1:7), those that mocked and derided Christ’s dying agonies, and the most violent opposers of His truth and His people, are raised to behold Him in His glory and to see the honor placed upon the loyal and obedient.”

—-  To understand this we must understand the word “all”. Based on what we will learn further, in this context it would mean that with this last group of resurrected ones, it now constitutes “all” of the special resurrected ones. The number is complete thus it is now–all. This does not preclude the raising of some in a prior special resurrection. For example, if an announcer in a stadium announced “We now have ALL the people come into the stadium for the game to begin” doesn’t mean that all of them came at one time. Some came at various times. But the full number had at that moment “come forth”.

—- This last group would obviously include the Roman soldiers who pierced him, the Pharisees who judged and mocked Him, violent men that have lived down through the ages, such as Nero and the like. Additionally it would include people like Mrs. Hastings.

Ellen White says the following “God gave me a vision last Sabbath night which I will write, I saw that she (Mrs. Hastings) was sealed and would come up at the voice of God and stand upon the earth, and would be with the 144,000. I saw we need not mourn for her; she would rest in the time of trouble, and all that we could mourn for was our loss in being deprived of her company. I saw her death would result in good.” ( 2 SLM p. 263).

—-  So it appears from EGW’s GC statement that both the good and bad are raised just prior to His coming in the clouds. But it does not preclude any prior special resurrections. A clear example of this is the next EGW statements showing that she, along with others will have further work to do after being raised again “In God’s kingdom”.

TESTIMONIES FOR THE CHURCH, Vol.7, p.17 Your work, my work, will not cease with this life. For a little while we may rest in the grave, but, when the call comes, we shall in the kingdom of God , take up the work once more.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 7, p.17) (Note- from the Old and New testaments through bro. Houteff’s divine work , we learn that there will be a “pre-millennial” phase of the kingdom of God, known also as His Church kingdom or Theocractic government -not the same as a typical current government kingdom)

EARLY WRITINGS,P.33 “And at the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled with the Holy Ghost as we went forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully.”

—-  From the above we can clearly see that she cannot be 1) raised just prior to our Lord’s coming in the clouds, as is Mrs. Hastings for example. She could not do any work at that time, as the number of God’s marked and sealed people are completed. 2) There will be others from those who died in the 3 angels message who will be raised up with her to join in the work (indicated by the “Your work” and “we may rest”). 3) This work shall be done in “God’s kingdom”. As such it must be the premillennial phase of the kingdom, because her only “work” was  in securing souls for our Lord and in the heavenly kingdom we shall not being doing that work she is hereto describing.

GREAT CONTROVERSY P.613- “At that time shall Michael stand up, the great Prince which standeth for the children of they people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book.” Daniel 12:1.

When the third angel’s message closes, mercy no longer pleads for the guilty inhabitants of the earth. The people of God have accomplished their work. They have received the “latter rain”, “the refreshing from the presence of the Lord,” and they are prepared for the trying hour before them. Angels are hastening to and fro in heaven. An angel returning from earth announces that his work is done; the final test has been brought upon the world, and all who have proved themselves loyal to the divine precepts have received “the seal of the living God”. Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above. He lifts His hands and with a loud voice says “It is done;” and all the angelic host lay off their crowns as He makes the solemn announcement: “He that is unjust let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy let him be filthy still:and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. Revelation 22:11. Every case has been decided for life or death. Christ has made the atonement for His people and blotted out their sins.

The number of His subjects is made up; “the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of kingdom under the whole heaven,” is about to be given to the heirs of salvation, and Jesus is to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.

When He leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of the earth. In that fearful time the righteous must live in the site of a holy God without an intercessor. The restraint which has been upon the wicked has been removed, and Satan has entire control of the finally impenitent.”

—- There can be no doubt, that EGW equates this “standing up” of Michael in Daniel 12:1, to that of the end of the world. The time when no more heavenly intercession can be made. The work of the 144,000 is done, the great multitude has been gathered from the within the false religions and churches into God’s church kingdom. However, as we shall see, along with this view there is  an additional interpretation of this quote in the Shepherd’s Rod and other writings of Victor Houteff.

—- In order to reconcile these two understandings we have three different analysis we can make. 1) We can say that EGW was correct in the above understanding of Daniel 12:1 (consequently bro. Houteff was in error). 2) The reverse, we can say bro. Houteff was correct and that EGW was in error. With both of these we must assume that either “prophet” was guilty of prophesying – error. A dangerous position to take indeed!

—-  3)Then there is the third scenario. Could it be that BOTH were correct, but that EGW being the prophet before bro. Houteff, had limited light on this particular subject and wrote that which she had(mainly the knowledge of the second special resurrection). Bro. Houteff upon the guiding of the Spirit of Truth, then was able to discern the unrolling of the scroll, to see clearer light on this subject. And therefore saw the first delivering of His people, specifically the 144,000 and those with them. We’ll touch more on this in part two of our study of the special resurrections. Next we shall look at EGW’s Early Writings.

EARLY WRITINGS, Page.36 “..Then I saw that Jesus would not leave the most holy place until every case was decided either for salvation or destruction, and that the wrath of God could not come until Jesus had finished His work in the most holy place, laid off His priestly attire, and clothed Him self with the garments of vengeance.”

—-  This statement is clearly addressed by brother Houteff in the Symbolic Code news publications as follows.

Question: “Please explain E.W. 36: “I saw that Jesus would not leave the most holy place until every case was decided either for salvation or destruction,” etc.

Answer: The question which here arises is how is it possible to reconcile “The Shepherd’s Rod” with the “Spirit of Prophecy,” when the one seems to say that Jesus will leave the most holy place at Eze. 9, while the other says He will not leave until every case is decided?

Without attempting to explain the event described in E.W. 36, we shall inquire only into the matter of whether it is possible in view of the E.W. statement for Jesus to “leave” the most holy place to execute the work of Eze. 9 before the general close of human probation.

To begin with there is nothing in the word “leave” that connotes finality and permanence of condition or action. To leave once does not preclude the possibility of having left on previous occasions and then returned. Hence, on the logic of language alone, the mere fact that Sr. White “saw that Jesus would not leave the most holy until

Vol. 1 Symbolic Code No. 7  pg. 8

every case was decided,” does not argue that He could therefore never have left the most holy place before, and that He cannot leave it to execute Eze. 9 on the church.

However, we need not base our position entirely on logic. The Scriptures abundantly evidence the fact that Jesus is to dwell in the midst of His People at a time before every case is decided. We quote Zech. 2:10, 11 — “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and shall be My people.”

Verse 11 proves that in “that day” when He comes and dwells in the midst of Zion, “many nations shall be joined to the Lord,” and every S.D.A. ought to know that there will be no nations joined to the Lord after probation is closed.

Moreover, in Isa. 66:15, which reads, “Behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with His chariots like a whirlwind, to render His anger with fury, and His rebuke with flames of fire,” (Verse 16) “For by fire and by His sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many,” we see that when He comes with fire, it is to “plead” with all flesh, which proves that it is during probationary time, for after the close of probation God will plead with no flesh.

Furthermore, Isa. 66:20 proves that it is in this time during which the Lord pleads with all flesh that “many nations” — “all your brethren” — are joined to the Lord. Hence, “in that day,” the day of slaughter (Eze. 9; Isa. 63; Isa. 66), He “will come, and…dwell in the midst of “Zion.”

Therefore, it is clear that Jesus is to come and dwell in the midst of His people here on earth before the close of probation, as He dwelt with His people in the exodus movement, as is described in Isa. 4.

Some have an altogether too narrow view of the Godhead. They think that in order for Jesus to carry on the investigative judgment in the heavenly sanctuary, He must confine Himself there every moment, and that even in case of necessity He cannot leave the place of the most holy apartment to do anything else until His mediatorial work is finished.

Christ’s departure from the holy place, at the consummation of the investigative judgment, is to result in His visible second advent, whereas the event of Eze. 9 and Zech. 2:9-11 is an invisible coming.

EARLY WRITINGS– Page 285 “It was at midnight that God chose to deliver His people. As the wicked were mocking around them, suddenly the sun appeared, shining in his strength, and the moon stood still. The wicked looked upon the scene with amazement, while the saints beheld with solemn joy the tokens of their deliverance. Signs and wonders followed in quick succession. Everything seemed turned out of it’s natural course. The streams ceased to flow. Dark, heavy clouds came up and clashed against each other. But there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters, shaking the heavens and the earth. There was a mighty earthquake. The graves were opened, and those who had died in faith under the third angel’s message, keeping the Sabbath, came forth from their dusty beds, glorified, to hear the covenant of peace that God was to make with those who had kept His law.”

—  In the above, it appears that this is a more complete description of the previously mentioned last special resurrection of Mrs. Hastings and other Sabbath keepers who died in observance of the 3 angel’s message, and were not partakers of the ones who took up “the work once more”. Thus it certainly cannot be the special resurrection of Ellen White and the other “workers” who came up before them.

TESTIMONIES FOR THE CHURCH, Volume 1, p.131-132 “ I was shown the company present at the conference. Said the angel: “Some food for worms,…….. some subjects of the seven last plaques, some will be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus.”

—-  This is a fascinating one because it shows the diversity of future paths they will take. The ones who will be “food for worms” appears to describe the wicked ones who stay dead, hence food for worms, until they rise to live in the short season, which is for a hundred years*. This is the final period preceding the “fire from heaven” that comes down to destroy them and purify the earth with fire. This is known as the short post-millennial season . (Rev. 20:7-9)

— In the other descriptions “plaque subjects” and “translated ones”, it appears these are some of those who rise with Ellen White. However, this will include both the good and bad, because obviously some suffer the plaques and others get translated ( backed up further from the forth coming bro. Houteff’s statements). The good are those who died “in the faith” and in good standing with the Lord, the ones who are described as being with the 144,000. Consequently the good ones, “take up the work once more”.

—-  Obviously, those she looked upon at her conference are now dead. So in order to have the events take place of which she described (and was given her by the angel), they will have to be resurrected in the first special resurrection with Ellen White. This cannot be the last special resurrection in the coming of our Lord in the clouds. When she says “some will be alive and remain upon the earth” it indicates future tense. It does not preclude that their bodies sleep for awhile, yet after being raised they will be alive and remain upon the earth. So we see in the two special and separate resurrections so far that both will have good and bad people raised up.

—- (* this comes from the early SDA belief as found in a Signs of the Times, dated April 19, 1910, also from bro. Houteff’s interpretation of the Noah flood type/anti-type)

—-  Keep in mind that in these apparent two special resurrections, it is in keeping with other double events that happen in the end times. Such as two harvests (the 144,000 and the great multitude). The two “first fruits”, one from the sleeping (Corinthians 15:20), one from the living (Rev.14:4). The two special resurrections would thus be not out of prior divine harmony.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS – p. 193 “ I saw the slave master …. has to suffer the seven last plaques, and then come up in the second resurrection, and suffer the second most awful death. Then the wrath of God will be appeased.”

—-  Here we see that the slave master, obviously one of the bad people, will be raised up in first special resurrection, most likely with Ellen White’s group because it will be before the seven last plaques start. It cannot be the second special resurrection because the plaques will have been done with (except possibly the last plaque). Also this would be the slave master’s first resurrection, therefore Ellen White makes note that after enduring the plaques, he will come up in the second resurrection in the short season with the rest of the wicked and have to suffer the second awful death.

.THE FAITH TO LIVE BY, P.183“The righteous dead will hear the sound of the last trump, and will come forth from their graves….the living righteous changed “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” (1 Cor.15:52). At the voice of God they were glorified; now they are made immortal, and with the risen saints are caught up to meet the Lord in the air…All precious dead, from righteous Abel to the last saint that dies, shall awake to glorious immortal life.”

—-  In the above we can see that EGW describes the consummate phase of the resurrection just prior to the Lord coming in the clouds, known as the “first resurrection” (Rev.20:6). This is not concerning any special resurrection.

SUMMARY

—-  We have now come to the end of our first study on EGW’s statements about the special resurrections. Let us summarize.

  1. We see that she had far greater light given her about the second special resurrection as opposed to the first.
  2. We see that she did have a somewhat dim light about the first special resurrection, indicated by the limited statements and descriptions. But the quotes – Test. For the Church, Vol. 7, p.17, EW, p.33, Test. For the Church,p. 131-132, confirm that there will indeed be a first special and separate resurrection.
  3. She makes a clear distinction of two separate special resurrections. The last pre-millennial resurrection, also known as the first resurrection (Rev.20:6) comes after the two special resurrections.

Next week in Part 2 we’ll look at brother Houteff’s work on the special resurrections. It will marvelously show the unrolling of the scroll, as he combines Spirit of Prophecy and Scripture.

“I’m Scared”

August 4, 2012

Recently I heard from a sister who took the time to write me and frankly the essence of her note was –“I’m scared”. She explained how the world is getting so filled with so many problems, crime, rumors of war (Israel conflict), inflation, our own country’s moral decline, etc. She asked whether it was time to “head for the hills”. This fear is rampant throughout the world. Let us look at our current situation and what our outlook should be.

Our Lord gave us great solid advice  we should always remember.  He said ” …I am with you always even until the end of the world.”(Matt.28:20). With so many ominous signs of disaster coming, it  is sometimes easy to forget those reassuring words. But if we truly study and learn His end time plan we can feel so confident and stand upon the firm rock of prophecy. We kind of stand back from it all, and think to ourselves ” Our Lord will work it out so that we will be safe and arrive safely into His soon to come premillennial kingdom.”

As we have posted before the Scriptures clearly indicates  our Lord will set-up His kingdom, first  “in the midst of the heathen”. For more info on this please see our post here https://godsloveandlaw.wordpress.com/2012/03/31/thy-kingdom-come-part-1-of-2/

But I can certainly understand how many in the world today(Particularly within the SDA) have fears. Afterall, we are told that soon the countries around the world, including the U.S. will establish a Sunday law and then many will have to submit or be labeled a rebel and not allowed to engage in worldly commerce and affairs. Jailed or worse eventually will occur.

But if we are true students of the Bible and SOP and the Elijah message we know how the real end time events unfoldLet’s look at the releasing of the blowing of the four winds. In (Rev.7:1) we read “After these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the winds should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree.”

In (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, P.152) Ellen White says that the four winds represent the Sunday law decree. So clear it is that we can see that a certain sealing takes place before the Sunday law decree goes forth(Rev. 7:2-4). The winds are not allowed to blow (enforcement) until all 144,000 servants of God are sealed. And the sealing , upon completion, is none other than the solemn vision of Ezekiel 9. (Testimonies for Ministers, P.445)

So instead of being afraid of the men of the world and what they may do, we really should concentrate on standing upright before the Lord, will no cherished sins in our midst. We will be facing the Lord in our churches. The beginning phase of the judgment of the living.

“At the time when the danger and depression of the church are greatest, the little company who are standing in the light will be sighing and crying for the abominations that are done in the land…The earnest prayers of this faithful few will not be in vain. When the Lord comes forth as an avenger, He will also come as a protector of all those who have preserved the faith in its purity and keep themselves unspotted from the world. It is at this time that God has promised to avenge His own elect which cry day and night unto Him, though He bear long with them.

The command is: ‘Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the forehead of the men that sigh and cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.’ These sighing and crying ones had been holding forth the words of life; they had reproved, COUNSELLED, and entreated. Some who had been dishonoring God repented and humbled their hearts before Him.”

She goes on to quote Ezekiel 9:5-6 and says, “Here we see that the church — the Lord’s sanctuary– was the first to feel the stroke of the wrath of God.”(Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, P.210-211)

So we see that before the winds blow , the Sunday law,  the wrath of God will occur in His church first. Some may ask why God would do this? The answer is simple, He cannot pour out His Holy Spirit upon “His” church until each and every Achan is removed. And they won’t leave unless He takes the reins  Himself.  “Awake, awake! Put on your strength O Zion; Put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy City! For the uncircumcised and the unclean shall no longer come to you.” (Isaiah 52:1).

In (Testimonies for the Church, Vol.5, P.157) Ellen White says that God’s power is stopped with even one Achan in the church, she quotes (Josh.6:7) for the prime example. So to effectively have the Loud Cry go out to all the world and win many from  out of Babylon, God must have a pure, powerful church. This is the whole reason for Ezekiel 9. It’s the strange act the Lord must perform.(Isaiah 28:21).

So we see that our “fear” really is not of man and what he will do but rather what our Lord is going to do! Remember we were told long ago that we, as mankind have two duties  — Fear God, and keep His Commandments (Ecc. 12:13). Yes, it is very solemn. But remember we are talking about a holy and pure God. All who are doing the “going through the motions” act, will be found out. The faithful keepers of His Commandments  who sigh and cry need not worry about being uncovered in that solemn day.

Fishers Of Men

July 28, 2012

Note: Due to the involved studies I am in now, with regard to the “special  resurrection”,  I request your prayers, that this very deep subject comes to clear light for us as truth believers. I am hopeful this will be published within a week or two.

One of the first things our Lord said when He began His ministry was “Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt. 4:19). We notice that Peter and Andrew “left their nets” and followed our Lord. This showed our Lord had “called” and they answered immediately with all their heart. In these very last hours, our Lord is calling many but are we answering? The reason for the call is that not only does He want us saved, but that He want’s us to go out and “fish” for our wayward brothers and sisters.

As with so much Scripture, the above words have a double application. They were true and applied to the people after our Lord spoke them and now, today,  they are true, yet in a different sense,  during the current anti-typical Elijah message. Let’s look at the application for us to today, it’s present truth application.

As any good fisherman knows there is much need for preparation. He must have all the necessary supplies and bait. He must also learn a very important asset–patience. Personally speaking I was never much of a fisherman because of this needed asset. If the fish didn’t bite within 15 or 20 minutes, I was bored. In our work to reach our brothers and sisters however, this asset is most precious.

If we reach out to them to let them know the precious message of the hour and they seem somewhat dis-interested, we should be patient and wait and watch for any new signs that they are willing to engage. Remember our Lord specifically said that we, the Laodicean church are in need of eye salve. This means we, the great majority within our church are not  “seeing” properly because we don’t feel we need any more truth.

We know from the prior posts that the ones who we seriously need to “fish” for are right there in our own churches! So how can we reach out to them today? Let’s look at some good ideas applicable for today’s world.

1) Attend church functions and get to know your brothers and sisters in the church. Ask them if they want to do a bible study. Keep in mind that because we are so close to the church judgment, we should try and study “present truth” as much as we can. Nothing is more “present” than the Elijah message. Most will need help to know what it is, due to the fact that they have not been taught it in the church.

2) Get involved on Facebook, and join a “present truth” SDA group. We have a growing site called Truth Tellers. We are actively spreading our Lord’s last message, the Elijah message. We started with about 100 and it has grown to about 300 from all around the world, praise the Lord!https://www.facebook.com/eugene.j.rush?ref=brem#!/groups/268904846461984/

3) Pray frequently for the Lord to help guide others to you.He knows  those who will need your attention and possibly be a study partner. The Lord’s words say that the “Spirit of Truth” will guide us, if we will honestly seek the truth.

To continue with the fishing analogy, we must have some good “bait”. That would be good solid teachings for them. Because the Lord is so close to coming down in a surprise visit, we can explain that EGW prophesied that a prophet would come after her. Our quotes would be (Testimonies for the Church, P. 475) and (1 Selected Messages, p. 412). His clear identifying mark will be that he interprets Scripture and foretells with his message , of the great and dreadful day soon to come. He speaks predominately to the SDA church, the Laodicean church.

Also keep in mind, there are quite a few brethren, who are at the ready to help in the present truth studies. Here are just a few. Feel  free to contact them for a private study.

3)Yours truly, bro. Rob  palmguy@dc.rr.com

Back to the fishing analogy. When we as fishermen today cast our line, it must be in an acceptable area. This means that if we go out into babylon and try to catch some fish, we are doing the exact opposite of what the original Elijah did. He did not even think of going out to the heathen and spreading God’s message. In Elijah’s day, God was concerned with His own people. Elijah’s  purpose  was to “fish” among his own people, to save them from idol worship and the wrath of God. Like wise we are to go among our own people today, as we are doing the anti-typical work of Elijah. Yes, there will come a God appointed time when we will fish among babylon in the near future, but God has not appointed it now because the Elijah message must go forth first because of the next to come  beginning phase of the church judgment. The Lord’splan is our plan, amen.

Men and women are waiting right there in our churches for someone to guide them. Just as the true men of God have always stepped to the forefront and lead the people to the truth, so too we as last day leaders must not forget our brethren. We must go out and be– fishers  of men. May the Lord guide us as we go out and bring in some catches.

In Christ, bro. Rob

He will set up a banner for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah, from the four corners of the earth.” (Isaiah 11:11-12)

For the LORD GOD will make a determined end in the midst of the land.”   (Isaiah  10:21)

“And it shall come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, will never again depend on him who defeated them, but will depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.” (Isaiah 10:20)

“Your watchmen shall lift up their voices, with their voices shall they sing together; for they shall see eye to eye when the LORD brings back Zion. (Isaiah 52:8)

My servant Jeremiah — “Therefore, behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “that they shall no longer say, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt, but, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them.’ And they shall dwell in their own land.” (Jeremiah 23:7-8)

“Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD has gone forth in fury– A violent whirlwind!  It will fall violently on the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD will not turn back until He has executed and performed the thoughts of His heart. In the latter days you will understand it perfectly.(Jeremiah 23:19-20)

“You are My battle-ax and weapons of war: For with you I will break the nations in pieces; With you I will destroy kingdoms; With you I will break in pieces the horse and it’s rider; With you I will break in pieces the chariot and it’s rider.” (Jeremiah 51:20-21)

My servant Ezekiel– “For thus says the Lord: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys and in all the inhabited places of the country.” (Ezekiel 34:12-13)

My servant Micah — ” The Lord’s voice cries to the city– Wisdom shall see your name: “Hear ye the rod! Who has appointed it?” (Micah 6:9)

My servant Zephaniah — ” I will gather those who sorrow over the appointed assembly, who are among you, to whom its reproach is a burden. Behold , at that time I will deal with all who afflict you; I will save the lame, and gather those who were driven out; I will appoint them for praise and fame in every land where they were put to shame. At  that time  I will bring  you back, even at the time I gather you; for I will give you fame and praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I return your captives before your eyes,” says the LORD.”  (Zephaniah 3:18-20)

As of this moment the applications are still in front of each and every believer. Even those in babylon right now can come and become converted before the Lord comes to the earth to begin judgment for the living. It is because our Lord has set a time-table for mankind, that He cannot wait for ever for His people to become truly converted. He must take the reins into His own hands (Test. to Ministers, p.300). As soon as the 144,000th person is counted, then it is that the final events will be rapid ones.

Let us not waste time, we must respond to His ad, and do so quickly. The rewards are too great for us to pass  it by. No other people in all of earth’s history have this chance–but us! Remember, our Lord has a strong rebuke for us, His last Laodicean church. We are seen as rich yet we are poor, blind and naked. We can indeed put enslave on by listening to His final message to us–the Elijah message. It tells us “how” to be among the 144,000.

I want to be a part of this great company, don’t you?
